Scouts are for all young people aged between 10½ and 14, no matter what your gender, faith, or whether you have any disabilities. A young person can come in to the Troop at 10 and may stay until they are 14½ years old. The Air Scout Troop is the third and final section in the Scout Group, after which they are encouraged to join the Air Explorer Unit which is run on a District rather than Group level.

The 1st Hainault Air Scout Troop meets on Saturday mornings between 10.30am and 12 midday.

The Scout Promise is the same for Air Scouts:

On my honour,

I promise that I will do my best,

to do my duty to God and to the Queen,

to help other people

and to keep the Scout Law.

As well as making this Promise, a Scout will also be expected to keep the Scout Law. The current Scout Law is based on the Laws of Baden and is a set of rules that Scouts should do their best to live their life by and again this is the same for Air Scouts.

The Laws are:

A Scout is to be trusted.
A Scout is to be loyal.
A Scout is friendly and considerate.
A Scout belongs to the worldwide family of Scouts.
A Scout has courage in all difficulties.
A Scout makes careful use of time and is careful of possessions and property.
A Scout has self-respect and respect for others.

What is Air Scouts?

Air Scouting is about delivering an aviation content as part of the balanced programme for ALL Scout Association members. In addition, the 1st Hainault Scout Group along with many others across the UK has a 'specialised' Air Scout Troop.

Air Scouting is for Scouts and Explorer Scouts who practise an aviation 'flavoured' form of Scouting. They still run a programme that involves all the elements of a Balanced Programme in the main Award and Challenge badge work, but they plan a certain part of their programme around Air Activities.

RAF Recognition

The Troop only formed in October 2010, and is slowly growing. Air Scout Troops or Explorer Air Scout Units may apply to become RAF Recognised, under an agreement between The Scout Association and the Royal Air Force, which can bring some benefits and a great deal of honour to your Group or Unit. Becoming an RAF Recognised Troop is a key aim in the 1st Hainault's Troop plan.

There are however only a total of 60 places allocated to the scheme. When the Troop is established and we have reached and exceeded the standard required, the Group will apply for RAF Recognition and we will have an inspection by a designated RAF (Reserve) Staff Officer of the local Wing of the Air Training Corps.

It's his/her recommendations that count - so we need to put on a good and smart show!

The Future...

Initial Inspection
Air Scout Groups who consider that they have reached the standard required should seek the approval of their District Commissioner and then apply to the Programme and Development Department at Gilwell Park. If the application is supported, this is forwarded to Headquarters Air Cadets who confirm a suitable date for the appropriate ATC Regional Commandant to carry out an initial inspection.

This inspection is normally carried out by the ATC Regional Commandant, or his Deputy. The District Commissioner should be informed of the date of inspection, so that he may be present. In addition the County/Area Commissioner should also be informed, as they may wish to be present at the inspection, together with other appropriate members of the County/Area team, such as the ACC/AAC (Scouts/Explorer Scouts) or Air Activities Adviser.

Re-Inspections
The programme for re-inspection of Recognised Groups is circulated by the Programme and Development Department at Gilwell Park. The inspection may be carried out by an officer nominated by the ATC Regional Commandant. To retain RAF Recognition the Group must prove to the Inspecting Officer that it continues to achieve the minimum standard required, as well as showing progress in efficiency.

Approval
Initial and annual retention of RAF Recognition is approved by the Commandant Air Cadets on the recommendation of the Inspecting Officer and the Director of Programme and Development.
